Green Smoothies – part 6: Benefits for Women’s Health

Women who regularly drink Green Smoothies found that PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) and menstrual problems like cramps are much improved. It is assumed that this is due to the generally harmonising effect on the whole organism combined with the mood lifting and  antispasmodic properties of the plant compounds. Women suffering from these problems would benefit from adding St John’s Wort, Agnus Castus and Lady’s Mantle regularly to their Green Smoothies. For extreme cramps Yarrow has been shown to be especially helpful. The so-called ‘alkaline fasting’, where women only drink Green Smoothies a few days before their period, has shown that women have virtually no negative symptoms any more, and they were also completely pain free.

Women who suffer from menopausal problems also find that their symptoms improve drastically or even disappear all together, as many plants contain secondary compounds with hormone balancing properties. Pomegranate has been shown to be  especially helpful as is Black Cohosh. Women who tend to suffer from bladder infections benefit from adding cranberries.

During pregnancy several positive effects of drinking Green Smoothies have been reported. The foetus is nourished with all necessary nutrients and the mother is protected from vitamin and mineral depletion. The same is naturally true for the period of breastfeeding, and from the middle of the first year of life Green Smoothies are the perfect first foods for babies besides  breast milk.
